Listening in on the listening brain

چکیده
www.physicstoday.org An article published in the journal Brain some 40 years ago forever changed the world of hearing assessment.1 Don Jewett and John Williston reported that neural firing recorded from the human scalp with electroencephalogram electrodes could determine whether a sound was heard. The measured electrical impulses originated in the midbrain, a part of the auditory brainstem, and auditory brainstem response (ABR) recording entered the clinic as an objective, passive means to determine whether newborn babies could hear. Audiologists no longer needed to wait until children were old enough to raise their hands in response to the beeps and bleeps of an audiometer to determine whether they could hear normally. There soon emerged other uses of ABR—tumor detection, diagnosis of nerve-damaging diseases such as multiple sclerosis, and more.2

The present study aimed to investigate the general pattern of brain dominance of undergraduate Shiraz University students and its effect on the use of listening comprehension strategies. Data was collected from 142 undergraduate Shiraz University students. The Hemispheric Dominance Test (HDT) was given to the participants to categorize them as right-, left- and whole-brain dominant, and the Str...

متن کاملThe Effect of Cognitive Factors of Rhetorically Different Listening Tasks on L2 Listening Quality of Iranian Advanced EFL Learners
This study examined the effect of two different authentic topic-familiar rhetorical L2 listening tasks (expository and argumentative) differing in reasoning demand on the listening comprehension scores of a number of Iranian EFL advanced learners. Sixty homogeneous advanced learners were recruited based on their performance on an English Language Proficiency test (Fowler & Coe, 1976). Then they...
متن کاملAn Investigation into the Effect of Authentic Materials on Iranian EFL Learners’ English Listening Comprehension
Listening comprehension means the process of understanding speech in a second or foreign language. It is the perception of information and stimuli received through the ears. Iranian EFL learners have serious difficulties in English listening comprehension because Iranian universities pay more attention to grammar and reading. The researchers used a set of authentic materials to improve Iranian ...
